Rock of Ages – Chapel Design

Concept

The Rock of Ages Chapel is envisioned as a place of community worship and a living reminder of the Creator—our eternal rock of refuge and strength. Inspired by the steadfast hills and mountains that surround the site, the design reflects both the grandeur of nature and the humility of human life in contrast.

Architectural Expression

The chapel rises on the summit of a hill, its vernacular brick masonry walls conveying permanence and simplicity.
Decorative lattice grills—patterned with the Star of David and Dove motifs—filter sunlight while symbolizing peace, hope, and divine protection. These lattices replace conventional glazing to encourage natural ventilation and cooling, allowing hot air to escape near the roof while drawing in gentle breezes.

The roof structure, formed from corrugated metal sheets topped with a protective cement screed, is supported by lightweight metal frames. Inside, the ceiling is lined with hand-woven reed mats crafted by local artisans, honoring community traditions and reinforcing the chapel’s atmosphere of quiet humility.

Site & Community

Radial pathways wind down the hill from the chapel, connecting to small shops, homes, and communal farming plots that support a self-sustaining village life. Rainwater channels carved into the natural slope collect and distribute water to intermediate terraces, nurturing agriculture and reinforcing the community’s frugal, earth-caring lifestyle.
