London Festival of Architecture – Pews & Perches 2020

Color Blob Bench

The London Festival of Architecture’s 2020 Pews & Perches competition invited designers to create benches that celebrate reuse of materials and draw inspiration from the Royal Docks, its waterfront setting, and the surrounding community. We made it to the quarter finalists

Our proposal, the Color Blob Bench, injects a burst of vivid color into the grey dockside landscape—like a splash of paint on pavement. The sculptural form seats two people comfortably, with an elevated mound for children or adventurous adults to climb and slide, plus a small integrated planter. Its futuristic shape showcases contemporary digital design and fabrication techniques.

Material & Fabrication Options

Option 1 – 3D Printed Plastic (Smooth Finish)

  • Made from recycled industrial or household plastic.
  • Smooth, self-cleaning surface that dries quickly after rain.
  • Higher mound doubles as a slide or mini climbing feature.
  • Benches can be arranged in a wide “V” to encourage conversation while maintaining social distance.

Option 2 – 3D Printed Plastic (Mesh Frame)

  • Also 3D printed from recycled plastic but with a framed mesh texture.
  • Foot-holds in the frame invite playful climbing.
  • Quick-drying and low-maintenance, with the same flexible “V” arrangement.

Option 3 – Upcycled Pine Planks

  • Crafted from pine boards reclaimed from shipping containers.
  • Slatted design allows rain to drain naturally, keeping the seat dry.
  • Gaps between planks provide natural grips for climbing fun.

The Color Blob Bench transforms leftover materials into a vibrant community perch, encouraging interaction, play, and sustainability on the Royal Docks.
