This experimental and visionary project explores alternative approaches to rapid, affordable housing through the reuse of waste materials and self-build construction systems. The intent is to address the growing housing crisis in a city where real estate costs continue to rise sharply, pushing lower-income communities toward expensive rentals and increasingly cramped living conditions.
The project positions housing as both affordable and adaptable, responding to two critical challenges:
• increasing access to dignified housing
• reducing landfill burden from non-compostable waste materials
At its core, the proposal adopts a human-centered design approach, empowering residents by equipping them with the skills to construct their own lightweight, portable dwellings. Using cement–plastic fiber boards and bamboo framing, the system is conceived as a flexible kit-of-parts that allows for easy assembly, repair, expansion, or dismantling as household needs evolve.
Designed specifically for a city as dynamic and fast-changing as Bengaluru, the model embraces impermanence and adaptability—recognizing that urban conditions, livelihoods, and housing requirements shift rapidly from year to year.
